Olympic Baseball

Olympic baseball unites nations on a global stage, celebrating the sport’s skill, strategy, and spirit at the highest level.

Olympic baseball has had an unusual history. It is one of the world’s major bat-and-ball sports, but it has not had a permanent place at the Summer Olympics. Instead, baseball has moved in and out of the Olympic program, depending on host-country interest, international participation, and the challenge of bringing top professional players to the Games.

Baseball appeared at different Olympics before it became a medal sport. It was played as an exhibition or demonstration event several times, including at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics and the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Those events helped show that baseball could work as an Olympic tournament, especially in countries where the sport already had strong fan support. The 1984 tournament was especially important because it took place at Dodger Stadium, one of the most famous baseball venues in the world. Baseball is scheduled to return to Dodger Stadium at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Baseball became an official Olympic medal sport at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. It remained on the program in 1996, 2000, 2004, and 2008. During this period, Cuba became the dominant Olympic baseball country. Cuba won gold in 1992, 1996, and 2004, while the United States won gold in 2000 and South Korea won gold in 2008. These tournaments showed the strength of baseball outside MLB, especially in Cuba, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and the wider Americas.

One challenge for Olympic baseball has been player availability. The MLB season takes place during the Summer Olympics, and Major League Baseball has not usually stopped its season to send active big-league players. That has made Olympic baseball different from Olympic basketball, where NBA stars often participate. Olympic baseball rosters have often included minor leaguers, college players, former MLB players, and professionals from leagues outside MLB.

After the 2008 Beijing Olympics, baseball was removed from the Olympic program. It returned for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, held in 2021, partly because Japan is one of the world’s strongest baseball countries. Japan won gold on home soil, with the United States taking silver and the Dominican Republic winning bronze. Baseball was not included at Paris 2024, but it has been added again for Los Angeles 2028, along with softball.

Olympic baseball matters because it frames baseball as a national-team sport, not only a club sport. It gives countries such as Japan, South Korea, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Venezuela, and the United States a global stage. Even with its irregular Olympic history, baseball’s return at LA28 shows that the sport remains an important part of the international sports landscape.
